The Role of Youth in Democratic Politics

Abstract

Young people constitute an important part of the electorate and represent a major source of civic energy, political ideas, and future leadership. Their participation in democratic politics can occur through voting, political parties, student and community organizations, public campaigns, digital platforms, volunteering, and direct engagement with public institutions. However, youth participation may be affected by political disengagement, limited representation, economic barriers, misinformation, and lack of trust in institutions. This paper examines nine major dimensions of the role of youth in democratic politics, including voting, political awareness, digital participation, civic education, political leadership, social movements, representation, policy engagement, and the challenges and opportunities facing young citizens.
