The Role of the President in the Indian Political System

Abstract

The President of India occupies the highest constitutional office in the Union and serves as the formal head of the Indian state. The office is established by the Constitution and combines constitutional, executive, legislative, financial, judicial, and emergency responsibilities. Although executive power is formally vested in the President, the parliamentary system operates on the principle that the President generally acts on the aid and advice of the Council of Ministers, subject to constitutional provisions. The President also performs important ceremonial and institutional functions and serves as a symbol of constitutional continuity. This paper examines nine major dimensions of the role of the President in the Indian political system, including constitutional position, executive functions, legislative responsibilities, appointments, financial powers, judicial powers, emergency provisions, federal relations, and contemporary significance.
