The Role of Beneficial Bacteria in Maintaining Human Health

Abstract

Beneficial bacteria are important members of the human microbiota and contribute to physiological processes that support health. Large microbial communities inhabit the gastrointestinal tract, skin, oral cavity, and other body sites, where they interact with host tissues and with other microorganisms. In the gut, beneficial bacteria participate in nutrient metabolism, production of short-chain fatty acids and other metabolites, maintenance of the intestinal barrier, colonization resistance against pathogens, and regulation of immune responses. Their abundance and activity are influenced by diet, age, medications, lifestyle, and environmental conditions. This paper examines nine major roles of beneficial bacteria, including microbial diversity, nutrient metabolism, intestinal barrier support, immune regulation, pathogen resistance, metabolic health, the gut-brain connection, probiotics and prebiotics, and emerging microbiome-based applications.
